Vacation.

We went to our friend Nate's wedding, wait! Look back at our first post with a Visitor of the Week, and it was Nathan and Rachel! Yep, them. They got married last weekend, so we drove out. We wanted to fly, but Eric wasn't allowed to after transplant. He got the okay last doctor appointment, but it was too late to buy tickets. So we rented a Jeep. It was so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

The drive was gorgeous and we had a really good time. We took the back route through Napa Valley and it was well worth it. The wedding was on Friday, and we got to see the Oakland Temple and the gardens on top of it. It was really windy. We really love Nate and Rachel and are so happy for them! We love when a friend gets married to someone great, because we get to double our friends!

Terry Herrera came out for the wedding; he is really close to Eric and Nate from their mission in Houston, Texas. It was really nice for me to meet him, and we got to hang out all weekend!

Between the wedding and the reception we had hours of time. We decided to go to downtown Oakland-- straight for Chinatown (on accident). We got some food which I REALLY didn't like. But I don't really like Chinese food. It wasn't very good but Eric tried to convince us all it was because he knew I didn't like it. Getting to Santa Rosa for the reception after that was the worst! We sat for two hours on the same block in traffic. Everything was beautiful all over northern California, but I don't think I could ever settle there because of the traffic.

This was a good reunion. It had been since our wedding that we had seen Seth and Andi. As soon as we reunited though, it was great. Eric was the emcee at the wedding and Seth manned the switch from music to mic. They are charming.

We didn't even make it to San Francisco until Saturday with all the crazy wedding stuff. There was a Farmer's market around Pier 3 (pier 39 is the famous one, so we started there and walked down). One of the things I loved the most about San Francisco was the dogs. There were dogs everywhere! Everyone would just bring their dog along and it was no problem. I want to live like that. I can't wait to get one! I loved the free spirits that roam there and I love the sea lions.

For example, this guy was our favorite street performer. He was an all out one man band, Mary Poppins style. He was darling and he played Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash and we loved it!

We could've watched the sea lions for hours. Seriously it's embarrassing but you can't stop because they are so funny! They have such personalities. They would yell at the other ones when they tried to jump on the dock. If they got wet they'd get so angry! It was so funny! Then some of them would try to jump up and they were too fat so they'd fall back in. I want one. Can I get one, Eric?

We walked forever and finally got to Ghirardelli Square. It was a looong walk, but worth it.

The walk back, however, would not have been worth it. So we hired help! Giovanni took us all the way back. He said he could've taken all three of us (Hererra was with us all day), but we got another pedicab and raced instead. The other guy one, pulled ahead at the last block.

Since we got home, Eric has been working non-stop with Katie at the Root Beer Mug. It's set to open this weekend, so come one, come all! They just got the foam on today, and it pretty much looks like a million bucks already.

It is up by Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. You really can't miss it.

  1. I'm glad you guys got to have a nice vacation! I love the pictures! Also, Holly, I feel like the fact that you loved the seals at Pier 39 just demonstrates how much better of a person you are than me...or at least more of an animal lover...or more aware of life's simple pleasures? When we went to San Francisco last summer I think I was too distracted by the smell of the seals to even really find them charming. I guess I'm heartless!

I had a baby.

It's a boy. I actually came to blogger to write about something else, but then I realized I haven't announced that I did, in fact, birth my child, and he did, in fact, make it here, which I'm not making light of. It is a fact I repeat to myself often. He is here, we made it. I am his mother and Eric is his father. He is a person and he learns every day. While it is easy to see him for what he is most right now, which is CUTE , he is also mellow and funny and happy, observant and sometimes timid, and sometimes noisy, aware and eager to grow. It is an amazingly wonderful and spiritual thing and I'm grateful every day for my son and the opportunity to raise him each day. I have had too many close to home tragedies recently to take this for granted. My dear neighbor and friend lost her son at 4 years old, an unexplainable accident that took him home to Heavenly Father. Another, my sister's closest friend, lost her son at 39 weeks pregnant, his body born to his famil...

Pictures from the Cruise

To accompany the last post. And Eric is the best for sending me the pics! Because they are great. It's just from the zip lining in Ensenada but it was so fun. Just off the ship in Ensenada. The whole group. Love being a part of this family! Getting geared up. Literally.  Don't be fooled. I was petrified at this point. This is Dave and Katie but it's the best showing of the first bridge. Eric about to cross the first bridge. I think this was the 3rd one. This was the easiest, I thought. Even though I look a little off balanced here. This is Katie. But this one was actually the hardest I thought, because you had to reach so high. My shoulder killed for like 4 days after this. Oh, and how about an actual zip line?! Doesn't look fast, but it was. It shows the distance really well, though. Eric had had enough and decided to take over the mic for the duration of the "tour"

Just a little curious

Does anyone else go back and read their own blog? Of course you do. It's a journal format. But I wonder if anyone goes and reads anyone else's blog still. I still read my parents' blogs, but even those have been several months. I haven't looked at my sisters' blogs in years, I don't know if I can remember the urls.  I logged in just to see if I could still get access so I'm leaving a little note to the world. It is so strange how the world changes. Personal blogs felt so permanent, but they weren't. They faded, and while it's still here, maybe no one else will ever read this again. Maybe an anthropologist digging through digital history trying to discover what the ancient world was... but doesn't it feel like all of this will be gone? And they'll be trying to learn more through my hairbrush and stanley cup?  But who am I to predict what will last and what will disappear?
